Metal Gear Solid 4 Delayed

Konami's baby and the Playstation 3's best hope for console sales has been delayed yet again.

Gamespot has recently reported that "Metal Gear Soild 4: Guns of the Patriots" has been delayed until the second quarter of 2008.

The claim is that further improvements are going to be made to meet everyone's expectations of the game when it is released.

Can Sony wait much longer for this blockbuster release?

We will see when March or April 2008 arrives.

Cheaper PS3 Yet Again

Gamespot has recently reported that Sony will be officially releasing a 40 GB version of the Playstation 3 in North American for $399.

On the console's November 2 release it will come bundled with a Blue-ray version of blockbuster film hit "Spiderman 3."

The 40 GB PS3 will have 2 USB ports and will still maintain 802.11 b/g wireless networking capability. However, what is most upsetting of all is the lack of software backwards compatibility for Playstation 2 discs. No word on potential emulation software currently used on the Xbox 360.

The news doesn't end there.

Sony has also announced that the price of the 80 GB version of the Playstation 3 bundled with the game "Motorstorm" has been lowered to $499 and is effective immediately.

This places the 80 GB PS3 only $50 within the $449 Xbox 360 Elite.

I believe Tor Thorsen and Emma Boyes related this Blueray perspective to the price drop best in their Gamespot article.

"That said, the PS3's inclusion of a Blu-ray disc drive may give it an edge to North American audio-visual fanatics still on the next-gen console fence. No 360 can play HD-DVDs without the addition of an external $179 HD-DVD player, which would make the Pro model cost $528 and the Elite cost $628 in the US for comparable functionality. Also, the 40GB PS3 is now the most affordable BD player on the market, with the cheapest standalone BD players still costing over $400. Also, all PS3s have HDMI audio-video outputs, a feature that is standard only on the 360 Elite, though it is being slowly phased into other models."

Capcom's Big Annoucement: Street Fighter 4

Capcom's official website has been a topic as of late due to a countdown labeled "Prepare Yourself."

The clock as expired.

Capcom's big news: "Street Fighter 4"

Not much information has been released about the game concerning which plateform it with be released on or a project release date.

Only a brief trailer has been released without any actual gameplay footage:

(Click on Image to see trailer)

More information can be found at the new game's official website.

This is the first new "Street Fighter" game since the release of "Street Fighter 3" in 1997. The game's tag line "A New Beginning" may imply some interesting changes or suggest a new direction in the series.

This comes to as a disappointment to Playstation 3 who were told that a major release for the PS3 was to be released this week.

Thus far, 1up.com has only announced that Capcom plans to bring "Lost Planet" to the PS3 in early 2008. Let's hope that is not the big news PS3 owners have been waiting for.

Super Smash 2008

Gamespot recently reported two new updates about the highly anticipated "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" for the Nintendo. There is the good and the bad.

First the good.

Sonic is reported to be a playable character in the game. Finally, Nintendo and Sega fans can finally face-off and see which plateforming icon is king.

Now the bad.

You won't be playing Sonic until 2008. The official website for the new Super Smash has reset it's release date to TBA: To Be Announced. A bit of a far cry from the initial Dec. 3rd release date.

The Japan release is set for January 2008, so it may be some time before Wii owners finally get the game they deserve.

New PS3 Version no Backwards Compatibility

Gamespot recently picked up on a story from The Hollywood Reporter stating that a new version of the Playstation 3 will be available state-side despite claims that the new version of the console would be released only in Europe.

The story from The Hollywood Reporter says that the new 40 GB version would be shipped to the US with a $399 price tag around November 2nd.

This new PS3 would be severely stripped down from the now discontinued 60 GB version. It would only have two USB ports as well as no additional memory card readers.

However, what is more concerning is lack of backwards compatibility with Playstation 2 titles. Strangely enough, the new PS3 will still be backwards compatible with PS1 games.

CVG has also recently reported that the Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced that there are no longer any plans on continuing with any future backwards compatible Playstation products.

"'...we believe this [backwards compatibility] less important now than when we launched... Furthermore we believe we should now be devoting our resources to the future of PlayStation gaming and delivering next generation experiences', Sony's said in a statement on its plan to phase out the 60GB PS3 in the UK and leave the new cut-down 40GB model as the only one available at retail."

Note that within this statement the information is only in relation to the new Playstation 3 console in Europe, not the United States. A US launch of the 40 GB still has not been confirmed.

It would be a very stupid move for Sony to end backwards compatibly because that function alone is a system selling quality. There may not be the demand in Europe that there is within the US for that functionality.

Bungie Jumps without a Bungie Cord

Apparently it is official, Gamespot reported today that "Halo" developer Bungie has officially split ways with Microsoft.

Microsoft will still retain a minority share in the company, but Bungie will function as an independent developer breaking its ties from Microsoft which were dated back to 2000.

No word if this means that we will see versions of Halo on the PS3 or Wii. Microsoft will do everything to be sure to keep the series console exclusive.

"'While we are supporting Bungie's desire to return to its independent roots, we will continue to invest in our Halo entertainment property with Bungie and other partners, such as Peter Jackson, on a new interactive series set in the Halo universe,' said Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios."

This is part of a shift in the industry to become more independent in game publishing so that games can be developed for multiplateforms. This obviously widens the consumer base.

This also generates more revenue which is much more attractive to the publisher, especially when you are known for releasing big name games such as "Halo3" which made $300 million in sales according to the Gamespot article.

This makes "Halo 3" the fastest selling video game in history.

Releasing "Halo 3" to a wider audience of PS3 and Wii owners will make good business for Bungie as well as a lot of green.

PS3 push back; Christmas in Feburary

Gamestop has reported that Unreal Tournament 3 will be pushed back to the first quarter 2008. This is very upsetting news since UT3 is supposed to be a big holiday release for the PS3 and provide some exclusivity for a short while before the Xbox 360 release.

This is been a continuing trend for big name video games that were slated for release by Christmas which has been pushed back to 2008. GTA 4, MGS 4, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. These delays are making what should be a great year for new releases seem much more lack luster.

So Merry Christmas, etc. with Call of Duty 4 and Assassin's Creed.

New Super Smash Character

Check out the random new character for Wii's Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

1up.com says that this Ness wannabe is called Lucas and is from a Japanese-only GBA game called "Mother 3."

So get excited to see this guy in action next year.

No Wii from Santa

Gamespot recent reported that the Nintento Wii may not be fully in-stock bby the holiday season according to Nintendo of America president and CEO Reggie Fils-Amie.

That sounds like a bunch of PR and crap to me.

The Wii could be rolling out left in right, but Nintendo is purposefully limiting their production to couple with their lead in sales. I say that this is a PR move because this looks like there is a much higher demand for the console than what there really is.

"We're working very hard to make sure that consumers are satisfied this holiday, but I can't guarantee that we're going to meet demand," (Fils-Amie) said. "As a matter of fact, I can tell you on the record we won't."
Sure, have fun with Metroid Prime 3 and all those other great Wii titles.
